Sounds in Our World
Suggested Age
• Pre-Kindergarten
Educational Goal
• Present children with sounds made by familiar objects or animals and encourage them to identify the origin of the sounds
Directions
1. Tell your child that the two of you are going on a treasure hunt for sounds in your neighbourhood.
2. Go for a walk in your neighbourhood with your child. As you walk, ask your child to pay attention to the sounds she hears. Ask her, "What traffic sounds do you hear? Do you hear buses, autos, taxis, or cars? What other sounds do you hear?” Your child might say he or she hears birds singing, people talking, children playing, etc.
3. When you get home, share the sounds you heard with a relative or friend. Have you child try and imitate the sounds. Have your child try to teach the relative or friend to make the sounds.
Additional Activities
• Play a game in which you and your child imitate sounds you heard on your walk. Try and guess the origin of the sound the other person is making.
• Have your child close her eyes next time you watch Galli Galli Sim Sim. Have her try to guess which character is speaking. Discuss how he or she can tell who it is.
• Put on music, and sing and dance along.
