Earth Friendly

Suggested Age
• Pre-Kindergarten
• Kindergarten
• Standard I
• Standard II

Educational Goal
• To expose children to the concept and process of recycling

Materials
• Household items that are usually discarded in the trash, such as old clothes, newspapers, packaging, and broken toys
• Markers, pens, crayons, or pencils
• Glue

Directions
1. Walk around the house with your child collecting items that would usually be thrown out. Do not use anything sharp, rusty, or broken as they may hurt your child. Look for items like old clothing, newspapers, and cardboard boxes.
2. Tell your child you are now going to use your imagination to create a sculpture out of the items you find. Together, put the items together to make a toy or decorative piece.
3. While you are making the sculpture, discuss why too much waste is bad for the earth. Discuss how litter clogs waterways and ruins water supplies, which leads to disease. Talk about the other harmful effects of waste including the danger to the soil, danger to animals, etc
4. Show your sculpture to friends and family so they can admire it.

Additional Activities
• Organize a cleanup drive in your community
Pick up all the trash in your neighbourhood. Wear rubber or plastic gloves, and ensure every child is accompanied by an adult who can handle items that might be dangerous. While cleaning up, save recyclable items. When you are done, use the items to create more art.
• Think of ways in which you can reduce the amount of waste you create as a family
Ask your child, “Are there things you can buy that use less packaging? Are there places or people who recycle newspaper and other paper products? Are there items you throw out that could be reused in other ways?”
