Educational Goal
• To encourage children to identify sound patterns and reproduce them
Materials
• Two cooking vessels
• Two spoons
Directions
1. Explain to your child that you are going to tap out a rhythm on a vessel. Ask your child to pay attention to the rhythm, because he or she will have to repeat it.
2. Tap out a simple rhythm. For example, using your spoon tap the vessel twice, pause, and then tap again. Ask your child to copy the rhythm using the other vessel and spoon. If your child has difficulty, keep trying until he or she masters it.
3. Now, have your child to tap out a rhythm. Copy the rhythm that your child taps out.
4. Take turns being the leader. Vary the length and speed of the different rhythms you play.
Additional Activities
• Tap quiet rhythms. Tap loud rhythms. Tap fast rhythms. Tap slow rhythms.
• Have your child to identify long and short beats and pauses.
