The Question Game

Suggested Age
• Pre-Kindergarten
• Kindergarten

Educational Goals

• To encourage children to recognize and name two-dimensional shapes
• To help children identify and classify groups of objects

Materials
• Paper cut-outs of circles, triangles and squares in different colours

Directions

1. Select three different shapes from your collection of cut-outs. Make sure the shapes are in different colours.
2. Help your child to identify each shape and each colour.
3. Tell your child that you are thinking of one of the shapes. Then ask your child to guess which shape you are thinking about, by asking you questions based on the cut-out she has just seen.
4. If required help your child formulate questions about colours, numbers of sides, and numbers of corners.
5. Continue asking and answering questions until your child is able to correctly identify all the shapes and colours.

Additional Activities
• Switch roles with your child. You ask questions and have your child answer them. Make sure your child understands how to answer the questions.
• Cut out pictures of fruits, vegetables, animals, toys, or articles of clothing from magazines or coloured paper. Play the game again with your child. Discuss how your questions will be different for these objects.
