Materials
• Large piece of paper
• Markers and crayons
Directions
• Go for a walk in your neighbourhood with your child. As you walk, discuss what you see.
• Have your child observe people and buildings in the neighbourhood.
• Ask your child, "What are they wearing? What jobs do they do?"
• Help him or her identify religious buildings, roadside stands, and other landmarks.
• When you return home, spread out a large piece of paper and ask your child to draw what he or she just saw. Older children can also label their illustrations.
• Ask your child about any other details he or she can recall, "Are there animals that live in your neighborhood that you want to include? Are there trees or plants that are special to you?"
• When you finish, hang the mural on the wall and celebrate.
Additional Activities
• Read a picture book about neighbourhoods in India and around the world.
• Draw an imaginary neighbourhood in an imaginary place. Ask your child, "How is it different from the neighbourhood you live in? How is it similar?"
• Look through magazines and books for pictures of neighbourhoods around the world.
• Discuss Galli Galli Sim Sim. Ask your child, "Who lives in this neighbourhood? Who works there? What are the houses and buildings there like?"
